Perhaps you can all help me. I'm completely new to Ubuntu. About 6 weeks ago, I bought my son a new computer. I immediatley upgraded it to the newest version of Ubuntu. I restarted the computer, and despite all text being in English, when I type the username it appears in (apparently) Arabic letters. Unfortunatley, unable to log in I am unable to use the new computer at all.

I have found references to this on the internet, but nothing at my tech level.

If you could offer any guidance, it wouldbe most greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

I'm facing exactly the same problem at the office. Luckily we have LTSP installed, so I can login at one of the thin clients and try to fix it from there.
I haven't tried anything yet, but there are three threads that might help:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1214057
http://newyork.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1108548
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=859091

Good luck and please if anyone else knows what's going on with Ubuntu and locales bugs please help. Not only that now I can't change to English at the login prompt, but also every time we log in with any user (via LTSP), the locales get completely messed up. Sometimes only Arabic works, sometimes only English. The Apply System-Wide... button in the Layouts tabs of the Keyboard Preferences doesn't seem to apply anything.
