I installed the Rockfish Sound card, which is supposed to be a clone of the creative soundblaster card. Ubuntu recognized the card as a soundblaster, but all I got was static (white noise). So I assume that even-though Ubuntu recognizes the hardware, that something is still missing? Any clues?

For now, I am back to the on-board sound.

I ran across this thread that seems very appropriate: White noise from Sound Blaster 5.1 VX, amd64 (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8371856#post8371856). The gist of this post is that the card needs to be initialized in Windows first, before it will work.

Also this thread has a good discussion: SB Audigy and Ubuntu 9.10 - No Sound - SOLVED (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1302457&highlight=sound+card).

Since I ran out of time this weekend, I returned the card to the store. I will be trying again later.

Today I received the Creative Blaster Audigy SE card. I first booted into WindowsXP and got it working. I then rebooted into Ubuntu and the card worked!

Since I got it configured to work in WindowsXP first, I can't answer the question of whether it would work should you install it and boot directly into Ubuntu.

Anyway Success, :D!:D:D
