Hey all. I'm looking for Ubuntu Apps that I can use to make and produce guitar related music with. I have an electric guitar and use my amp to preamp the signal before outputting it to the computer's mic in input, so that it adds depth to it when I record it in Audacity.

What i'm really looking for are programs that will add effects to the guitar in realtime, such as distortion, flanging, spatial effects, etc.

Does anyone know of any apps that I can download which will make guitar playing more fun? Thanks.

unless there's a guitar app that will do your practicing for you, i'm gonna have to say linux isn't ready for the desktop.

you can use cubase plugins with audacity, and there are certainly plenty of effects and such for cubase. the problem is you need to use a wrapper for the plugins and i assume it'll be a pain in the **** to set up, and you'll get a performance hit. i havent tried it though so its pure speculation. there's a section on plugins in the audacity help file.

no, it's more like unless there is a way to have someone else form calluses for you, then the guitar isn't ready for the desktop :D

I've been looking off and on, but to be honest I tend to just play and I haven't used both the computer and guitar at the same time much. I did a little Pro Tools recording some time back, but that's all. However, you may find this thread enlightening. There are a group of Ubuntu users working to make music with Linux. It's mostly studio type stuff, but that would include effects and processing. I'll add the link to their site as well.
