I have this problem in e.g. Pidgin and Anki (Japanese flashcard app). Ctrl+C does nothing, and selecting with the mouse and middle-clicking will paste whatever was selected prior to that, e.g. in Firefox, for the MOST part...

To demonstrate this behavior, I'm now selecting-pasting the first three words in THIS sentence: To demonstrate this
And now I'm doing the same thing in the IM window of a friend: To demonstrate this
(expected: "kanske går dit")
Now doing this again using mouse+middle-click: To demonstrate this
And friend's IM window: kanske går dit
Okay, it worked, so now let me try the same thing (mouse+mid) from Anki (flash card app): kanske går dit
Uh-huh? Expected a Japanese word from a flash card.
Trying Ctrl+C from Anki: To demonstrate this
There we have that one again.

Hope this provides some insight to someone out there... I'd love a solution to this insanity. :(
