I was wondering is it possible to burn the Ubuntu 9.10 ISO to a DVD-R and use that as a installation disc to dual boot XP and Ubuntu?

Ooh cool thanks. Well I tried using one of the DVD-R and it didn't recognize the DVD but I did end up finding a CD and I burned it and installed Ubuntu successfully. Now this will probably be a dumb question, but do I have to keep the CD in the computer anymore? Can I take it out and not use it again? Or do I have to use it for anything else?

I have successfully installed Ubuntu by burning the installation CD ISO image into a DVD-R. But need to take note that some burning software will outright reject the burning as it expects a CD to be inserted. The Brasero Disc Burner, the standard burner in Ubuntu, should be able to do the job:

As long as grub has been installed correctly (which is usually the case) you should be able to take out the cd and reboot.
