Having trouble gettin AWN working

I recently re-installed 9.10 and now I can't get AWN to work.
I have tried installing thru spm and Ubuntu software center, I can start the manager, add applets,... but nothing shows up at the bottom of the screen.
I am probably missing a button somewhere, and which is the best way to install it.
And the installs seem to work fine no errors or anything, this worked before??

AWN needs compiz to be running. Have you enabeled Visual Effects?

compiz is up and working fine...how do I enable visual effects?
never mind, I didn't think compiz would work without visual effects, but it does.

visual effects are set to extra still no go with AWN.
Man the first time I set it up no problem, after reinstalling Ubuntu it wont't start.

AWN manager works great, I can select applets, icon effects,...but not dock

Whenever I set visual effects it changes my compiz settings like turning off cube, if I recheck cube it turns off visual effects??
I know before I had both cube and AWN...strange

the computer started acting all weird, locked up, so I restart and there AWN is.
So it works, more or less
