View Full Version : Bugs Linux will never get rid off

While the developers work on improving boot times by hardly noticeable amounts of time, giving us a flicker-free boot process which actually flickers more than the old tech and other similar things, there are long standing bugs/missing features on Linux that noone cares about.

My personal favorite is not being able to mount a data CD/DVD and receiving the following message:

mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

Another one: not being able to mount a samba share to a local folder under Gnome.

Share, for our amusement and your release of frustration, any long standing bug/missing feature that annoys you :D

Actually you can, but you just don't have a GUI to do that. Have you tried pyNeighborhood or Gigolo?

Ah, yes, I know I can. Actually I even did that, but I'm referring to stock Gnome.

imo:

in all cases for all mounting that fails... a graphical option should pop up explaining the error, explaining the danger, and asking the user if user wants to force it to mount anyways. possibly, only display this option for sudoers and require the password.

because here is my personal experience with failed mounting:

"ok, i know damn well this thing will mount just freaking fine. i just need to muck about in the command line for 2 or 3 minutes and figure out which arguments i need to use..."

for me, its 2 or 3 minutes. back in time to when i first started using Linux, it was 20 or 30 minutes.

i agree with what you're saying, but not with your examples.

that's because certain polish only comes from companies, and ubuntu is based off something that is very unpolished.

best just to fork.

To the OP: Did you file bug reports? Because if not, then you have no right to complain. (If you have, then go ahead and complain.)

:) And I can't figure out the reports in the media (http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/wellington/666582) about a mall in Wellington which has supposedly been closed to traffic (in particular buses) since 1979. Funny thing is I distinctly remember seeing buses using it in the 1980s, and driving down it one time circa 1988.

My father always used to tell me that "never" is a very long time.

what would be accomplished by him submitting bug reports that already exist?
