I recently did a fresh install of Karmic. Everything was working well untill Epiphany froze.
I did a Ctrl+Alt+Backspace but when I tried to log back in it failed and returned me to the Gnome login screen. Also the Sessions menu at the bottom of the Gnome login screen had disappeared so I couldn't try loging in in safe mode.
If I drop to tty1 I can login but 'startx' just leaves me with a white cursor on a black screen.
I tried deleting .gconf and ,gconfd and uninstalling and reinstalling gdm but nothing could get Gnome back.

Beaten, I did a reinstall of Karmic. Everything fine and Gnome working well. I checked to make sure the sessions menu was present on the Gnome login, screen. It was.
Played around for a bit then restarted the computer normaly.

Can't login to Gnome, Sessions menu missing from the bottom of the Gnome login page.

Head / desk.

Help!?
