notified of a particular icon appearing in gnome-panel notification area

Hi All,

Is there a way in which I can be notified of a new icon appearing on the gnome-panel notification area.
Lotus Notes notifies me of a new mail by placing a new-mail icon in the notification area. I want to handle that event and run a script when a new mail arrives..
Any ideas on pointers on how to get started?

I would think that a better solution would be if lotus notes were to run the app when new mail is recieved, though I don't use lotus notes so it may not be an option.

but still I'd like to know if there "Is there a way in which I can be notified of a new icon appearing on the gnome-panel notification area."
... or even better "get notified on a particular audio being played" .. though the second question doesn't fit this forum.
