gnome panel can be made totally transparent. but can the window list be made transparent as well? coz it looks really odd if the gnome panel's transparent and the opened windows tabs arent.

Sure, using compiz. Check out forlong's blog for more info on setting this up.

Sorta with gnome, but KDE has it beat concerning panels.
Too bad KDE sucks so bad in Ubuntu.

There you go, instructions for transparent everything.

the middle tells how to get transparent menus.

You must use Compiz for this to work.

You will need compiz installed but you can cheat to an effect with ubuntu tweak.
I've been told that you can edit menu transparency, under compiz (I think)

I am no expert and have been using these settings since the Beryl days. I don't use a dock but it seems logical to me to change the "dock" settings. I am not afraid to play with and tweak settings.

Notice the word "dock" followed by the value "67".

Did you try changing the value to a higher number? Or take "dock" out of the presets? Possible removing "dock" will make the dock fully opaque again.

Did you read the link in the middle of the instructions about window matching? There is a lot more info there about what you just did.

Please read this link for more info:

I'm not trying to be "preachy" but sometimes it comes out that way.

Post back if any of this helped. It may help someone else in the future.

i'm currently using ubuntu tweak to configure the settings. and its working perfectly. no changes to dock. also i can turn firefox transparent as well thanks to compiz!

there is a "Grab" option in the opacity settings of compiz which helped me to change gnome panel transparency without affecting dock transparency.

thanks for ur help and suggestions. :)

Question:
According to this site: http://wiki.compiz.org/WindowMatching
There's a normal type of window which makes everything transparent. But! I would like to have everything, but firefox transparent, how can i achieve that? (if it's possible ofc)

OK nvm, i've managed to do it seems there was order issue, because normal was making everything transparent
class=Firefox first
then type=normal
