top panel problems

Hello everyone! My top panel was showing two icons for sound yesterday, this is a problem many have encountered but I solved it slightly dumber than them: I tried to delete one of the from the panel. This action erased both, I don't know how to get the sound button back (which is important ^^) and even apps like skype are not shown with a button when they are running. Any ideas how I can reactivate the panel?

Right-click in the panel, select "Add to Panel, find the "Notification Area"-applet and drag&drop it into the panel.

and how does the same thing work on Lucid Lynx? I have a notification area, but my sound button won't come back... Can't find it in the "add to panel" menu. active programs like skype and rythmbox are still shown, just the sound button is gone. Why do they change these kind of things? Kick out the noobs?
