View Full Version : What are some good FALSE linux rumors that you've heard?

The Funkbomb

I tried to convince someone to use linux and they swore that it doesn't support flash.

Of course I've heard the "There's no games for linux".

I've heard, "I'd try it but I'm not a programmer."

What else have you heard?

That they say it come from Jurassic era. You have to key in everything on a command line. No window and not user friendly. Thats what keep me so long to try out Linux. Been fool for years. Shssh!!! what a waste of mine time.

Indeed. But not as much is not never, and I have heard people say never. And more than that, they explained it as "Linux filesystems treat the HDD as a circle, whereas Windows treats it as a line". That makes perfect sense up until the point you actually think about it, and from my understanding it is in no way indicative of how ext filesystems actually avoid fragmentation.

That's true! It doesn't support Adobe Flash - you have to run it in Wine, and even then the latest versions don't work.

The biggest false Linux things that I've heard are "It's too hard for the average person", "It's not ready for prime time" and "The desktop isn't as friendly and usable as Windows".

Oh, but it *is* communism. But voluntary communism arising spontaneously in a free market is a totally different animal than non-voluntary communism being mandated by the government through the establishment of an unfree market.

In other words, people being able to do what they want with their money/goods/software and choosing to share is entirely different than the government saying "give us your money and we'll make sure it gets... shared."

That was not completely false (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support/+bug/59695) before Jaunty. I don't consider it to be Ubuntu's fault, but my laptop disk did lose 20% of its lifetime (according to S.M.A.R.T. analysis) before I became aware of the issue.

As for the topic, there are several examples such as

"Linux is secure"

"Linux is stable"

"Linux is easy"

"Linux is free"

and other statements that largely depend on versions, distros and users.

That free culture is thinly veiled communism.
That free culture is a religion.

That is not false BTW

Quite. One extremely annoying "feature" of some versions of MS Windows is that they spread crud all over one's entire storage for no good reason (notably what we here would call the "swap slice") meaning it makes it a right PITA to convert any machine into a dual-boot one since an intensive and time-consuming de-frag is required.

Yes, I was talking about Flash (the editor) rather than Flash Player (the player).

I just remembered another false rumour: That on Linux, you can't map the Windows key so it opens the "start menu". Except for Sabayon, apparently. The inability to change one keyboard shortcut was what's keeping him on Windows. This man also wanted to buy a radio that showed the station name on its LCD screen, and wouldn't buy one without this feature. He owns an HD PVR and a Tivo, hooked up to the same TV. Why did he get the Tivo when he already had the higher-capacity PVR? Well, because on the Tivo he can get to channel 2 by pressing "21" rather than pressing "2".

I find it an acceptable neologism. I like that there's a distinction between viruses like H1N1 and virii like JeniferLopez.

Except that it's grammatically incorrect, either way. It's not an acceptable anything.

vi*rus

–noun, plural -rus⋅es.
1. an ultramicroscopic (20 to 300 nm in diameter), metabolically inert, infectious agent that replicates only within the cells of living hosts, mainly bacteria, plants, and animals: composed of an RNA or DNA core, a protein coat, and, in more complex types, a surrounding envelope.
2. Informal. a viral disease.
3. a corrupting influence on morals or the intellect; poison.
4. a segment of self-replicating code planted illegally in a computer program, often to damage or shut down a system or network.

Which is one reason why I always setup a page file partition on any of the windows installs I've used since I figured out it was possible to do so with windows, and was worth the effort (about 2001-2009, when I decided that this whole windows lark was more trouble than it was worth).

Here's one I heard recently.

If Linux becomes viable, people will start charging for it. It will no longer be free!

For a lot of people, this is indeed true.

What are some good FALSE linux rumors that you've heard?

Actually that is pretty true. I don't know anyone that even knows what Linux is, that isn't a nerd. Come on, compiling software, patching kernels... Buzzzzzz

Linux sucks because it can't play games.
Linux is a game

This isnt a false hood, its an indisputable fact:

People with beards understand linux better than people without them. However, wearing a false beard does not increase understanding.

I have a goatee. I guess that explains why I only partly understand Linux.

I'd like to know where you got this 2% from. W3Schools doesn't count since they only measure hits to their site. They reported higher use, so more linux users went, and consequently, the statistic rose.

Wrong. W3 has a snippit of code that you can put on your webpage. The info on webpages that have this, and info from W3 are recorded. Even though the info is not by any means complete and is an estimate, it still shows that Linux has grown is usage.

Every other statistic site disagrees. This makes W3Schools statistics deviant and "not fit for reporting".

recently in my operating system class we were talking about Linux and how there are free OS's and some Linux OS's for sell

then we talked about how you can change the Linux kernel if you like, this one guy has this idea that if you pay for something, you cant modify it at all.

after spending 2 minutes explaining the GPL, still didn't get it and responding with a buying gas analogy( something about when you buy gas you cant share whats still at the station or something) , spent another 3 mins explain how it says right there in the license that if you distribute it, modified or not, you must have the source available

barely got the concept.

I was using him as an example to illustrate the level of intelligence one would require to use Windows in proportion to the "smart person" generalization descriptive of the supposed intelligence required to use Linux, sarcastically of course. . .
