All my attempts to shut down the new version fail. The only way to shut down is to press the power button.

This was installed by the usual upgrade method.

Can you advise how to fix this?

I have the same problem. Looked around in plenty of forums and have tried several fixes but none have worked.

tried old fixes like adding apm into /etc/modules and also adding apm=power-off into etc/default/grub

none of this has worked. Does anyone have any new suggestions?

I don't get any error messages. I get the splash screen and then my monitor goes blank and the HDD stops spinning but the computer remains on (i.e. lights and fans still on) Have to resort to holding down the power button.

Any help is much appreciated!
