Hm, since yesterday my file manager (nautilus) thinks that all my files are executables. I can still open the files in the appropriate applications, but only with the "open with.." option. default is invariably "execute".
I tried to fix it like the bug about a month ago (all files appeared as text files https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shared-mime-info/+bug/444962 (http://https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shared-mime-info/+bug/444962) ), but it didn't help much.

Has anyone got a fix for that?

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit on a Core2Duo Lenovo Thinkpad SL 500.

Thank you very much in adance,

Christian

Have you tried the following:
Open nautilus' preferenes. Open behaviour and choose to ask each time if you want to open a file for editing or execute it.

I hope I understood your problem correctly.

EDIT: I re-read your question and your problem seems to run deeper... Sorry if I wasn 't much help.

OK, I got fooled. I recently installed LXDE, just to check out how far they have progressed in the meantime. Nevertheless, I went back to GNOME- more convenient and my laptop has the resources to cope with the processing demands.

When I now click on places and open a folder it opens with PCMANFM instead of Nautilus. Since the MIME- types in PCMANFM seem to be brocken I got the weird behavior I described above.
The question now is, how do I change the default filemanager back to Nautilus?

Thanks in advance,

Christian (who feels quite a bit embarrassed now- obviously PCMANFM became almost indistinguishable from Nautilus over the time ;) ...)
