The latest xubuntu disk is about 8 MB too big to fit on a CD-RW.

Can I edit this somehow so I can burn it on a CD-RW. I don't have any more CD-Rs, and the machine I'm using won't boot from usb.

According to the book Ubuntu Kung Fu by Keir Thomas, tip #27, there is a method for overburning CDs. It's not a 100% perfect solution and it may not work for you. In fact, there's some speculation that the method could cause damage to your CD unit. I haven't personally tried it, so I can't vouch for the outcome. Here's how to overburn:

1. Open gconf-editor
2. Head over to /apps/nautilus-cd-burner
3. Put a check alongside "overburn" on the right.

I realize that you're using Xubuntu, and it tends to be different in some aspects from Ubuntu, so if this method doesn't apply at all, I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge of Xubuntu. Good luck!

If you have network ability like ethernet when you boot to the ubuntu installer, I suggest burning the mini.iso and installing the xfce4 metapackage.

gnome metapackage is broken I believe.
