I was wondering if a general do it all program like vlc media player could become the "windows media player" of ubuntu by default ? What do you think ?

Probably not. There's already a media player in the form of Totem (or Kaffeine if you're using Kubuntu like me). Besides, VLC is included in universe, so it isn't as updated as often as those players. Plus, VLC can play proprietary codecs out of the box, so having it included with the base Ubuntu install would go against what Ubuntu stands for.

BS ubuntu will use if it doesn't have patent issues but it does in the US. VLC is hosted in france and there is doesn't where there are BS laws to deal with.

Oh yeah right... I forgot about the proprietary dilemma.
I knew there was a reason.
Never mind then.

it'd be nice if there were a newer build of vlc in the repositorys though, it still uses gtk1 if i remeber rightly. i have to build it myself to get it using gtk2

Compile it as I did if you don't like it, just remember to --enable-gtk2 flag also ;)

i really love VLC...
it makes the move to linux smoother with less codec issues...(try converting 100 WMA files to MP3 files in 1 day!)
