If you like making music with programs like fruityloops(windows version) then check out LMMS in app center. Its made by the same people but is free on linux. Can use synth, guitar, piano and tons of other instruments you can tweak inside it to make beats.

If you like drawing and making vector graphics check into Inkscape... It can do some awesome drawing and effects/vectorizing! Not as much as GIMP but it has its up's!

Just check the descriptions and the websites for any programs that might seem interesting, and if they still seem interesting install them and try them out. It's the best way to see what's best for your needs. By asking here, in time you'll see recommendations for about every program there is in there.

Also check: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=382137
You'll find some amazing stuff there.

Wine (beta), Open Arena, LMMS, K3B. There's more but I'm on my laptop at the moment and can't really think what I've installed on my desktop. As others have said though it really depends on what you want to do.
