System>Preferences>About Me.
I get that I can put my pic. and contact info. in there -but why would I want to? Does it serve some other programs functionality? Why is it there?
Thanks.

I presume it'd be for if you networked your computers at a business.

That way when you go to access one computer from another, you can see whose computer it is and their contact info.

Yea, or if you use samba (just guessing here) or any other file sharing client, it may be used as an identification. I agree with Wataru8675 (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=866533) said

i use the About Me to put a pic,
so that in the GDM screen it displays a pic for me alongside my username ;)

I just can't remember my mobile number. About Me provides a handy place to keep it.

If you forget your name, and your underwear is currently inaccessible. It's handy.

It is a easy GUI to change the password as well.
