View Full Version : [ubuntu] Kernel update not listed, Gnome failed. Please help!

I've got a bit of a mess.

I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 by downloading a cd through bittorrent, and virtually mounting it. The first issue was the lack of sound and graphics card degradation, which I eventually figured out probably came from the kernel update, or an error with the menu.lst. Whenever I boot up (a dual boot with W7), it gives me the option of 9.04, not 9.10.

Now, however, it won't even go into Gnome, just droping into the command line after displaying "There is a problem with the configuration server. (/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)." I think that this is a result of my hard drive filling up unexpectedly.

So, I used cp to backup my /home to an external hard drive, is this the best thing to do? Next, hopefully the directions given here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1061084) will work. Would they not work due to the limited space on the hard drive?

I can use commands on the command line, but I'm really still new to linux.
Thanks in advance!
