Ubuntu 9.10 probs

HELP! Was running Vista and partitioned Ubuntu 9.04. Upgraded to Windows 7, (all went well) next week upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10. Installation sort of went o.k. only Ubuntu screen was black with white logo, logged in o.k. but any mouse movement was jerky and I had no sound. Now I cannot log in to Ubuntu at all, I just get a black screen, and shortly advised that it has timed out. Is there any way I can get Ubuntu working again. Please bear in mind that I am not computer literate. I started with 7.04 and everything has worked well with upgrades until now.

Did you have all the 9.04 updates completed before getting 9.10? It's important to make sure every last 9.04 update is complete before upgrading.
