I need to host a community for a guild and was looking into forum softwares. I have used a lot of them but still need to ask. What is a good free forum software that has a calendar were we can schedule events and such. If there is one. I don't think phpbb 3 has a calendar, AEF does i think, but they are barely heard of and have pretty much no customization available.

Well phpBB3 is the best and I am sure that it has a calendar MOD or something. You can also try punBB but it is more lite but it's fast. MyBB has a calendar, I am almost 90% sure :)

EDIT
yep:
Advanced event based calendar functionality allowing multiple calendars, ranged and repeating events, event moderation, private and public events, and more

I think you might find something suitable by searching on www.sourceforge.net.

I may also suggest this website: http://php.opensourcecms.com/
But I think MyBB will be perfect for you. You decide!

SMF is the highest rated free software forum. On top of that, its open source too.

There are a number of good forum softwares out there. MyBB and SMF (if you choose it, go for the 2.0 RC) are both solid choices for something comprehensive. You might want to check out forummatrix (http://www.forummatrix.org) for comparisons between software.

WOW thanks for that website! I never knew of it before. I may try smf just because i never used it before, and i never knew "before today" that there were themes for it. Tanks for the help :)

OvBB, even though it's in alpha, and no longer under development, you can learn all about it on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OvBB

You can get a mess of modifications for it here: Click Here (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=0df2d87d6e8cf2018c9e7c56ba37815f2c80cbc5 7d273d7e)

vb3GNS is the only surviving major overhaul skin for OvBB that is around.

PHPbb cannot be beaten in the number of mods and support that exist for it. Other forums have their merit, but if you don't know php and have specific needs, I'd go with phpbb, as it has alot more mods and such.

phpBB doesn't have auto avatar resizing (Nor does OvBB for that matter), and it's been said by the devs that it never will.

Please do not use phpBB, it's full of security holes and bugs. Why it's so popular is beyond me.

SMF 2.0 RC1.2 had some (lots of) problems, but the latest RC2 is actually really nice, I think you should go for it.

MyBB nice. It isn't quite as polished as SMF, but it's nice.

If you ever want to go with paid forum software, IPB 3.0 is just awesome (better than vBulletin, IMO).

+1 For MyBB and SMF ;)

And I agree that you shouldn't be using phpBB, it's really bloated.

Some misconceptions to be cleared up:

phpbb is not bloated, in fact it's more lightweight than both SMF and MyBB. It also doesn't have such bad security, it's a misconception. It's more barebones and requires some work to set up, but it's still an excellent choice.

MyBB is my favourite :)

It's easy to set up, friendly and powerful :)

+1 Phpbb2 had a lot of security holes, but neither were bloated...
