Ubuntu is not free.

You're supposed to pay for it with testing, bug reports and contributions.

Yes, I think I am right in saying this " There is no " I " in Windows ", just like in the same context, there is no " I " in Bill Gates. But as a great philosopher once wrote " As we live in a world without Walls or
Hedges why do we need Windows or Gates " sorry once again I digress. UBUNTU is free because Mark Suttleworth say's so. I think that I am right in saying this. No doubt someone will correct me again if I am wrong.

Ubuntu is free because of the generous people who contribute to it and make it great, for free.

There is no market for selling linux since according to the GPL (Which the gnu utilities and the linux kernel is licensed under) allows free copying. Even if you where to sell it, there would be little market for it but there is a market for support. So most people focus on that.

Linux isn't amazing because it costs nothing though, but because it is not proprietary. I'll just stop here before I start to ramble, besides I don't even know if I am being trolled yet.

Because we're a comunity and we love each other? :)
Also the fact that there are a lot of programmers looking for merit or trying to learn and get experience and who just love to see their software used. (I mean, what programmer doesn't?)

I have a patch that will let you use diet soda to activate. PM if you want rapidshare link.
I also have a crack to let totem play DRM-free content.

Canonical uses a different business model.

How does Canonical make money?

Canonical revenues come from its commercial support contracts and engineering services. Canonical offers global, 24x7 support services to customers ranging from Fortune 500 companies to schools and research institutes to governments.

Ya, programming seems to be a bit like journalism in that sense, people working freelance ;)
