You lost me. Wine can emulate any Windows back to Win95.

Have you looked at kmymoney2? I used to use an older version of quicken, and find that kmm2 is better than that, and certainly does all I want and more.

I have no experience of its effectiveness, but there is an "Import qif files" function in the file menu, so it may do what your father needs. Give it a look. It will bring in some kde lib files and various qt packages as well, but nothing that will upset your computer or other gnome apps, if gnome is what he would use.

You should also give GnuCash a shot. It seems to work well for me and also has an "import .qif" option. I've never used Quicken, so I can't say for sure how they compare.

Either Kmymoney or gnuCash will do basic checkbook recording and allow some download and import of data. They work differently than Quicken so there is some learning curve to be able to use them. Try both and see which you like better.
If your Dad is using some of Quicken's advanced features he may not find those in any of the available linux based apps.

If he does online banking give this a look. It even has firefox extentions and works a lot like the online version of quicken only better! Its also platform independent since its all done online. You can still download your bank files and then upload them to wesabe, but if u use the firefox extension you can do it automatically. check it out i think you'll like it! I sure do! http://www.wesabe.com/ :KS:KS:KS:KS:KS

thanks for the link, but he has a (possibly valid) phobia about online banking, and plus his PC doesn't have internet :( )

Hello

I have used Quicken as well as GNUCash and there is a difference between them but otherwise they are both very good for money management.

I am not exactly sure about quicken before 2008 but go to the file menu and select export->.QIF file or if .QIF isn't there try .QDF, GNUCash accepts both formats.

Install GNUCash via the synaptic package manager and fire it up(ignore the import .QIF or start an account), go to File->import->.QIF or .QDF file (which ever you chose) and follow the instructions on-screen.

Hope this helps.:p

Just tell him there is nothing he can do about the online banking phobia. If he has a bank account its already online in one form or another. My sister works at a bank and she says customers come in all the time with their online banking phobias but what they don't realize is that the bank branches are accessing your account online anyway. Thats why you don't have to go to the same location to get access to your money. Besides that, wesabe really only has read access to the account information so its not going to make any new transactions. The thing I like the most is that you don't have to reenter data like you would if you are doing offline banking. If you're set on using a separate application then the ones mentioned above are good and there is also one called grisbi which runs on windows and linux. http://www.grisbi.org/

I have been using Moneydance for almost 2 years. It is not free, ($30) I think. It has some rough spots, but seems good overall.

For personal use. It does not work well on commercial bookkeeping.

I have also used Moneydance for a few years now, and I find it quite good for personal use (which is exactly what it is designed for).

It has nowhere near the quantity of features of Quicken, but I quickly found that I never used or needed all this extra bloatware that Quicken used to basically justify expensive updates on a regular basis.

Moneydance imports Quicken files directly and the updates to new versions are free.

Look at Moneydance you will not find it in synaptic, here is the link

http://moneydance.com/

If you decide to try it, there is a free trial
once you have the file downloaded in the same directory right click and select open in terminal install Monydance by typing

./moneydance_linux_x86wj.sh

in the terminal this will install java needed

I been using monydance since 2006 the nice thing about this software I paid only for my first version in 2006 I will get free upgrades till the 2010 I think which then I will be able to purchase moneydance half price.
