I am currently using XFCE with Nautilus as the file manager and Kwin as the windows manager. I have gdesklets running at startup. I use about 190 megs of memory at startup even with the transluencies and other effects enabled.

Best of all three worlds, eh?

Running for a couple hours, I find that running GNOME with firefox, beep media player, and gdesklets, I use around 190 megabytes.

Yup. I use Nautilus because it has better auto mount features and I prefer the way it looks and performs better. I use Kwin because of the effects and eyecandy it provides vs Rox or Metacity. XFCE still seems snappier and fster than Gnome even with these additions. Also it has an even cleaner interface and easier to navigate menus than Gnome.

ok, maybe i am an idiot.... but how to show how much memory is being used by apps? my kde info center says this:

total physical mem : 488mb
free physical mem : 14mb (varies)
shared mem : 0
disk buffers : 4.5mb
disk cache mem : 100mb (wtf?)
total swap : 956mb
free swap : 894mb

copter@xidge:~$ free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 499364 485808 13556 0 7884 102208
-/+ buffers/cache: 375716 123648
Swap: 979924 72668 907256

im using kde 3.5
opera 8.5

Using 894mb of RAM. :)

Well, running dapper amd64 on an opteron 144, with 2 gigs of ram (good thing I picked up a gig during xmas :) )

http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/2241/screenshotsystemmonitor8tq.th.png (http://img73.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshotsystemmonitor8tq.png)

I'm not a fan of rebooting...
uptime
03:55:30 up 12 days, 21:09, 2 users, load average: 0.82, 1.64, 1.64
I know, lame up time, but I am running dapper, so I do reboot every now and then... Normally, after a month or so... :)

Things I run and use,

nautilus
gaim
firefox
bittornado (usually a few at once)
terminal (for compiling and navigating usually)
gthumb
abiword
openoffice
gimp
zsnes
mednafen
beep-media-player
tvtime
audacious
adplay
gnome-system-monitor
vlc
totem
mplayer
...

Well the list goes on, and yeah I normally don't have them all open at once... Although I get pretty close...

I use about 75mb once I log in, then 85mb if I choose to run some of my start up apps.
Then about 160mb with gaim, rhythmbox, and firefox open.

With Beep, Nicotine, Firefox, Gaim and Gdesklets running I use 180 MB.

110 MB after reboot.

since i started using a patched version of dillo, with dillo, rxvt, sylpheed-claws, pypanel, xmms and conky all open, in openbox, i'm still only using 82mbs memory and 12mbs of swap. opening a pic in gimp just kicked it up to 97mbs.

Does 1-1.5kg of brain cells count? :)
Seriously, just under 100MB after a restart, about 150 under medium load and up to 200 and more if using Eclipse or OO.o. It usually uses about 20-30MB of swap, but if I run Eclipse or some other big hog it goes up to the skies.

hmm.. maybe i will ask again - what am i doing wrong? after the boot allready more than 90% of my ram is being used by some other apps. what shall i do to optimise memory usage?

ok, maybe i am an idiot.... but how to show how much memory is being used by apps? my kde info center says this:
Open a terminal and type "free -m" and it'll round your usage off to MB. The 2nd two lines are the interesting ones. The "+/- buffers/cache" is how much physical memory your applications are using and "swap" is how much swap space they're using. The total of the 2 is your total memory usage.

As for me,

In Ubuntu (Dapper):
Just fluxbox = 55 MB

In Arch:
Just fluxbox = 29 MB
Fluxbox + adesklet volume control + kopete + kompose = 42 MB

I use Gaim for my Yahoo! account, X-Chat (they are both running all the time and I keep my PC powered on all the time for 1 year). I run XMMS most of the time also. Other programs I use: Epiphany for web browsing, Anjuta for learning C++, UT2004Demo and Enemy Territory as games (I'll soon try Counter-Strike with wine or cedega). As word processor I use most of the time GEdit since I don't need a big soft for that, I only take notices and/or tutorials. For more ample operations I'd use Abi Word, it's lighter than OpenOffice and I think it's great. I also have some panel applets active all the time: System Monitor, Dictionary Lookup (I'm from a non-english speakers country), Volume Control and Clock Applet.

I'll soon make a web server where I will keep a forum (btw, does anybody know how can I make a database in MySQL? I installed Apache2 web server and I'm trying to make it work).

555.6 mb of ram
21 mb of swap

Why this uses swap at all is beyond me, I have 2 gb of ram it should really be smart enough to keep it in ram when there's this much to spare.

I don't have exact numbers but I'd guess about 200-250MB on Dapper with XGL/Compiz, Firefox, Gaim, xchat, and BMP running. I've got 2GB of RAM, so I doubt I'll run out :-P

With gaim, deskbarapplet, weather-applet, liferea, firefox, mail-notification, xgl/compiz and all the necessary gnome stuff...

I'm running.....274 megabytes of ram out of 503...which isn't that bad on my gnome system.

To get the fade effects would I need to follow the guide here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=75527

or can this be done in dapper a different way?

Why does it matter how much ram we have free? Being that disk cache should start filling it all up after a while.

hizaguchi
April 22nd, 2006, 05:32 PM
Because the cache clears itself out to make room for apps to run, so it's not really slowing you down.

Breezy- Plain GNOME, Firefox (With tons of tabs), GAIM, XMMS, and quite a lot of "stuff" on the panels- 208 MB. Thatis only using a measley 27% of my RAM....
