I have upgraded from ubuntu desktop 9.04 -> 9.10, but I have had problems with the display ever since. I have a Shuttle model ss51 computer with onboard SiS 651 VGA graphics card. I have seen the thread about ATI and Nvidia problems, but haven't dared following their instructions as I don't want to make things worse as it's not ATI/Nvidia
.
I get to the normal Ubunto logo and then the display goes black, and all I get is a dialogbox to log on, when I do, I just get a spinning wheel (like hourglass in Win).
Via putty I can log in and I get this message when I type: startx

startx
xauth: /home/kanolsen/.Xauthority not writable, changes will be ignored
xauth: error in locking authority file /home/kanolsen/.Xauthority
3 times

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.XO-lock and start again

What does this mean?
How can I solve this problem?
What else should I type to get diagnostic information so you can help me so I can log in and work as normally again.

Thanks in advance.
