Ok please advise cos im getting very confused.

I have a Acer travelmate 240, 2.6Gig cpu, 1Gig ram, which had a working and uptodate version of Hardy on.

I tried upgrading to Kosmic 9.10 but choosing "install" from the menu just ran the "Live CD"??? (machine works fine in live cd btw).
I Tried it quite a few times, I download new .iso from a different source (country) and burnt it as slow as I could, I eventually tried installing 5 times same issue each time.

Eventually in desperation I installed xp and reformatted hdd.

Then tried the Kosmic install again, I choose english then install, and saw the ubuntu logo for a while but now screen is black and hdd and cd lights have been on all night, nothing seems to be happening.

any advise more than appreciated.

Check md5sum (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM) and check disc integrity. (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck?action=show&redirect=CDIntegrityCheck) if md5sum is not correct download same iso eiyh torrent and point download to thr folder with existing iso. That way torrent will just remove bad files and replace them with good ones. After thar run md5sum again and if it is O.K. burn disc on lower possible speed and after that run disc integrity. When you are done and all is correct go for install.
