I'm trying to install Karmic on a new netbook of mine without a cd-drive, so I'm using a usb drive.
The USB creator utility won't take my .iso file. I get the following error message, when trying to open the .iso in the utility:

"This is not a desktop install CD and thus cannot be used by this application."

What is going on?

I couldn't get 'USB Startup Disk Creator' to work in 9.10 but it works in 9.04. I suggest you try using 9.04 to make your USB drive.

You can use the 'Live CD' to create a USB of itself!

I am using 9.04 to make my usb drive, as it happens. I'm afraid to upgrade on my main computer until the quarter ends. :p

I assume you already have an iso image. In that case, USB Startup Disk Creator (in 9.04) should work. You can also try UNetbootin, it's another usb boot creator I'm using while the USB Startup Disk Creator bug is not fixed in 9.10. It's in the Ubuntu Universe repositories if I'm not mistaken.

Where did you download it from? Torrent or a website?

If it was not a torrent did you perform an md5 checksum to make sure the file was not corrupted in the download? There are instructions on how to do this on the Ubuntu Download page (or search for it).

usb start up disk creator requires a cd in the drive
and makes space for home dir and allows you to make changes and updates

unetbootin only makes the stick work as a live cd
