hi,

I am installing Ubunto 9.10 from a live CD to my Win XP (SP3) with NTFS, 1.5G ram, plenty of space (50 GB). It show me the menu and when I pick the first option to install side by side XP, it shows me 3 lines of messages and shuts down my laptop.
I have tried it many times and it does the same.

any thoughts?
-thanks.

Why not just boot from the Ubuntu CD and install that way?

Try choosing the partition space manually.

These guys over here have a pretty decent set of instructions

http://apcmag.com/the_definitive_dualbooting_guide_linux_vista_and_x p_stepbystep.htm

Couple of things to note.
1) run an md5 checksum on your image before you burn it --> https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
2) burn the disk at something like 4X speed
3) run an md5 checksum on the burned cd, as per 1.

It does rule out a lot of 'funnies'

Regards,

Phill.
