Since upgrading to 9.10 my pc has died, I downloaded 9.04 and can get it to run but I cannot find any of my work files, whats my next step? or should I just forget the linux thing and go back to using just XP?

If your computer is dead, how do you get it to start? :) Use the Live CD to retrieve you files, or describe your problem with the dead? PC. It may be something easy to fix.

I always keep an external hard drive enclosure with me for this exact reason. Pull the drive, pop it in the enclosure, and mount it to a working machine to pull off the data you need.

you could try booting from the live CD and trying to look at the drives from there. I've managed that. I remember having to create a user in the live cd environment to have to do something, but I don't remember what anymore. It was to do with pulling files of a machine that wouldn't start.
