No grub menu on boot

Hi guys

I have ubuntu 9.10 but the grub menu does not appear on boot. When booting I see Grub but when I press ESC it just boots to the login screen. Just a note I have
sda1 9.10
sda2 XP
sda3 /home
sd4 /swap

please help

Grub2 in 9.10 shows the menu if you press SHIFT.
