ok, i want to make a ubuntu distrothat i can give to my windows friends that have propierty software on it so you can play mp3 dvd flash etc

I am wondering if i can dothis under the gnu licence

As long as you make the source code of everything you give them that is GPL available to them, yes.

As for the proprietary stuff, you have to make sure that the non-GPL software's licenses have been adhered to, and that it is legal for you to distribute that software under the laws of the country or countries involved.

It's probably best not to muck around with it, just get them the basic install image and tell them what to install for the rest - "ubuntu-restricted-extras" is a good package to start with, then add the Medibuntu repository for DVD playing.

The proprietary software you mentioned has nothing to do with GPL. If you want to be in the clear, check the licenses of each and make sure each has no redistribution restrictions in Australia.

PS: An easier option would be to give them Kiwi Linux, or Linux Mint.
