Hi.

I am trying Xubuntu and it worked great from the LiveUSB and the installation went fine, but when I restart it stays in this black screen and asks for my login and password.

I type them and then it stays as if it was a terminal like

myusername@mylaptop $

And that's it. I tried to insert a root password with sudo passwd root and setting a new one. Then I typed /etc/init.d/gdm start and it said I dont know what but didnt work.

I installed Xubuntu again and the problem remained.

Does anyone know what is happening and how to fix it?

Thanks

hi,

take a look here (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck?action=show&redirect=CDIntegrityCheck).

if that doesn't do it, lets narrow the possible causes down and find out if the problem is specific to the version of ubuntu you are using.

give 8.04 a shot, and let us know if that works.

based on your answer there, we will be able to help you further.

You mean to download and erase 9.10 and install 8.04 just to see if it works?

Come on that takes ages.

I tried 8.10 and 9.04 in the past and this didnt happen, if that means something.

And I am not using a CD but a USB that I made with Unetbootin and never had a problem before. Other people have this same problem, it is not a burning problem but a Xubuntu problem maybe related to the graphic card of my laptop *SiS Mirage 3 to which I must install some unofficial driver for sis 671/672 that works perfect bioth in ubuntu and xubuntu

forgot to mention that the screen flickers at that black login screen, same as other people are suffering http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1318783&highlight=login
