I have a fairly oldish Compaq Laptop that I am currently running Ubuntu 9.1 on. The problem is the hard disk on this laptop died a year ago or so, so I've been running Ubuntu off a USB external drive. It has really been running pretty great except it's not very portable with that huge external drive. Is there anyway I could get Ubuntu installed on a 8GB thumb drive and not use the external drive? I had previously tried using that menu item "Create USB Startup Drive" but was never able to get it to run. I think the problem is that this laptop doesn't allow you to boot from a thumb drive. They way I have it running with my external drive is I have it boot from the Live CD and then I boot from the hard drive. Any suggestions on how to do get the thumb drive to work? We're taking a trip in 3 weeks and I sure would like to leave that big hard drive behind.

I run Ubuntu off an 8GB thumb drive. Works fine. I posted the instructions I used in this topic (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1193680). As for your boot problem have a look here (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-boot-cd-for-ubuntu-810/)
