Look at the screenshot:

/etc/fonts/local.conf (http://file.aim.pp.ru/2009/11/11/local.conf) and ~/.Xdefaults (http://file.aim.pp.ru/2009/11/11/Xdefaults.txt).

Can one point me how to configure thunderbird 3.0 to look the same as firefox and other apps ui in my ubuntu does?

Ubuntu 9.04
thunderbird-3.0 from packages https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-daily/+archive/ppa/ and from mozilla.org site - the same issue!

I have a similar problem. I've just installed Thunderbird 3 in Jaunty and the fonts within the program don't look good. They look unaliased, with fuzzy edges. I'm also searching for a solution to this now.

Some posts suggest that font-related problems in Mozilla applications is the fault of "fontconfig". I'm installing Thunderbird 3.0 in Jaunty from a PPA now. A post suggested that the font problem did not present if Thunderbird was installed from a PPA rather than run from the Mozilla download archive.

All of this aside -- it's so frustrating to use the latest and greatest everything and still have these irritating problems. How are "moms and pops" who using GNU/Linux/Ubuntu ever going to be expected to hack around with config files and the like just to get a basic application installed and looking consistent with everything else on the system. :(

Installed Thunderbird 3.0pre6 from a PPA and the fonts look correct.
