If I upgrade to Karmic is it possible to keep Pidgin as my IM client and save its configuration since it's replaced by another in 9.10?
could i copy the directory with the program and settings onto another media and replace it after the upgrade?

If you upgrade (and not clean install) Pidgin should still be your default im messenger.

If you have done an upgrade then you will see pidgin and empathy both but pidgin does not work properly.

if you have done a clean install, there would be no pidgin in that case

if you have added all the repositories then (i have medibuntu as well apart from usual multiverse and restricted)

sudo apt-get install pidgin
enter the password then and just wait.

this would install pidgin again and it works correctly with empathy as well.

it does on my install.

i have not yet upgraded (and in my case it would be preferable to upgrade rather than install). so is there a workaround to getting Pidgin working in karmic?

I upgraded from 8.10->9.04->9.10 all at once and Pidgin is still intact and works fine. :D

I upgraded from 8.10->9.04->9.10 all at once and Pidgin is still intact and works fine. :D Same, upgrade from 9.04 > 9.10 with Pidgin in place all the while, working fine after.
