Does anybody use the Gnome Do's Docky only without the menu bars on top and bottom?

I would love to throw the top and bottom bar away and use only Docky especially with the new docklets which enables you to put time, weather, battery status, etc... in there. But there are still many things missing from the usual bars you have in ubuntu by default. For example the status area, managing wifi connections or simply changing the sound volume...

Isn't there a way to add these features to Docky or another application similar to Docky which can do this? I guess that docklets are pretty new and new docklets will appear but my question is whether the team behind Gnome do intends to have Docky as a replacement for the usual menu bars or just as something special to the original Gnome Do search functionality.

It sounds like you are looking for specific dock navigator software that emulates the MAC OS X docking station.

To get this feature enabled in Ubuntu, they have multiple docking station as you mentioned "widgets" - it is AKA AWN Navigator. You can enable those in AWN Navigator if you wanted those widgets enabled. Look for it in Synaptic Package Manager.

To get a notification area without a panel, you can use stalonetray.

Thanks for the info :) just installed awn and stalonetray and it looks quite nice. :) Lets see how quickly is it going to annoy me and force back to using the standard gnome panels :-D

Have you replace Docky with AWN? You could stick to Docky if you want.

Kind of... I'm trying AWN and Docky, can't decide which one or whether any of them to use. I don't really know whether it improves the UI or just slows me down and annoys me time to time :D
