I've posted (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1319621) to a thread over the last few days about a problem I had with the 9.04 > 9.10 upgrade. Given that I got only one reply to that, and the solution did not help, I accept that no one else has any idea what I should do, either.
Sooooo...
I've read numerous helpful posts here in this forum about how to do a 9.10 clean install, thereby (in theory) sidestepping any problems I had on the upgrade. In particular, this comment (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8234070&postcount=6) by presence1960 lays it out clearly and succinctly. But I do have some questions, given my unreadable display:
Backing up my home directory should be no problem. (From within XP, I can "see" -- read-only, but that's good enough -- the entire Ubuntu partition.) Am I right about that?
Based on my experience with the busted-font problem, I assume I'll have to log into an xterm session, which will at least give me a terminal where I can enter the dpkg command to back up the package selection. Does anyone foresee any problems with this? If the upgrade to 9.04 hosed some fonts, the dpkg command will not back up/restore the broken fonts, will it?
Any other advice? I do absolutely need to get my problem fixed. Never having done a clean install over a busted upgrade, though, I'm a bit nervous.
