Is this junky OS EVER going to work?
I've been using Ubuntu for quite a while and never had these kind of problems.
Definately NOT an upgrade!

Screen resolution is still 800x600, and now Firefox crashes everytime I try to open it.

Computer is:

Compaq Presario SR1426NX w/onboard graphics and a Compaq FS7600 monitor. This system has worked flawlessly with the three previous versions of Ubuntu. Auto detected everything, including multiple screen resolutions.

Truthfully, I'm about ready to give up on 9.10, and find my 9.04 disk and go back

I found a screen rez workaround.... it's sort of a pain, but it worked for me:
try this (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8280317#post8280317).

Thanks for trying to help! I've been fighting with this thing for two weeks now, and I'm just DONE! Time to move on to something else (OS).

Thanks for the help

If you're not totally done with Ubuntu, I found 9.04 to be a stable and pleasant release.

Have you tried downloading the live CD and doing a clean install rather than an upgrade? I understand your frustration because I wrestled with Karmic for a week and a half before I finally got it to install properly, but now that it's finally working, it's a very nice OS.

firefox crashing? .. what about GIMP, and gparted, and the system monitor?

Are you using Gnome-globalmenu?

I haven't tried that yet. This is the family's computer (4 user's) and we all have sooooo much stuff saved, that it would be to frustrating to lose everything.

it would be to frustrating to lose everything.

If you don't have a full backup of all your data and have verified that you can restore it, you are simply biding your time until you lose everything.

+1

Maybe this could be the impetus you need to backup all your precious data. It can be an incredible hassle (believe me, I know), especially the first time, but the peace of mind it affords is well worth the effort IMHO. It has been my experience (and advice from many others) that a clean install of the OS is better than an upgrade to ensure maximum responsiveness and performance. I have been using Ubuntu since Hardy and I have clean installed every incarnation since.
