Installing Ubuntu New User...Help ASAP

I am using windows Xp for last 6 years and I want to use Ubuntu now.I got a CD of Ubuntu 8.54.So I want to know whether it is suitable for My PC.My PC is Compaq Presario with Intel Pentium 3 Processor. Specification are 256MB ram.Intel 82810E display adapter.I donot know which sound card.Tell me if I can go with the Ubuntu Installation..Please......

I want to join free software community.Help me urgently.........

Please try more lightweight flavor of ubuntu called Xubuntu (http://www.xubuntu.org/)
It is 50% less hardware consuming then ubuntu while it has the same engine, applications and support community.
