upgraded to karmic and sound is gone. tried System >> Pref >> Sound and get a "Waiting for sound system to respond" message, followed by . . . nothing.
I cannot check volume setting because i have no Volume icon to bring up the mixer.
Gave myself permission under Users & Groups to access audio devices.
When I did the system test and it played a test tone i did get a sound.
Help! (newbie, btw)
