Is there any big noticable speed difference when using a compiled kernel instead of the one provided as a .deb in repos.

Just wondering. Had compiled a kernel once don't remember the speed difference as it was done just after first boot after install of Ubuntu. Took very long to compile though I remember and a lot of questions to make config file!

Oftentimes compiling your own kernel can work wonders as the kernel would be optimized for your hardware, but if the normal kernel works then I would just forget it.
Usually the generic x86 kernel works fine on my machine
