Hi,

I've created some wallpapers for linux with some characters from anime. I thought, why not? I've uploaded the images here (http://sites.google.com/site/animegateway/home/gnulinux-anime-wallpapers-1). Right now, I only have three images and I hope to do more soon. Oh, and feel free to use and distribute the images; after all, it's free software!

P.S: Please post your comments if you like it. If you don't, post all the same!

Comments anyone? Also, I would appreciate it if I can get some tips on cool image editing tricks with GIMP or Xara Xtreme.

i like the effort, but never watched dbz.. i was always into Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon, and Digimon...
nice work, yet i can't imagine why u chose the std ubuntu color scheme for the first image... i don't know of a single ubuntu user who keeps that the same... :D
i have to say though, that last one is exceptional!!! love it..
now make me a Metalgarurumon wallpaper! :D jk

Thanks for the feedback. I've added one more here (http://sites.google.com/site/animegateway/home/gnulinux-anime-wallpapers-1).

Expected that comment though.;) It just felt more authentic; more ubuntu-ish to do that!

I really like this one here (http://2555843052773899731-a-1802744773732722657-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/animegateway/home/gnulinux-anime-wallpapers-1/Rei-Ayanami-Linux-1.jpg?attachauth=ANoY7cqO-D89e_9ZW5JQP8SQ299sGwKe3yboX6d1DU9flNBiQUdPQV7jPQ9 6wI6IABIKuBBMQAWxyFtmeq7VFnethsa6-v3ouu0NCIsgoYXtNnfzrV22Mb6hJ-y-I2yTnzRCnIAGGvmM_EHvR3mySXbVacrHth4Z6gvc3XI1zwYT1T jAVVHs6ivHiclD8kpi3NnYCRtmz8Qp9H12xH1uuU_mPjq_Xx9l B26CTEpdx2NCNSQ9-Piw9B9wRCNqH09_5HSpzorvGKim&attredirects=0&safe=on), minus the person. I don't actually like/dislike her, it's just I don't watch the show so it just kinda clutters up the space. If you could make the same thing without her. The font, effects, and colour scheme are great.

I was hoping they were going to be original characters like some of the Ubuntu Girls. Original is always better and it eliminates copyright problems.

Second that. Still, it's nice that you've made an effort and they're pretty good wallpapers.

Thanks very much.:D I've tried to recreate it as best as I could. Here's the link (http://sites.google.com/site/animegateway/home/gnulinux-anime-wallpapers-1/Ubuntu-GNU-Linux.jpg?attredirects=0).

This is how I did the background:

1) Create a new empty image in Gimp and select Layers->Transparency->Add Alpha Channel to add alpha channel. Unless you do it, you cannot use any of the options in Filters->Alpha to Logo.

2) Now select Filters->Alpha to Logo->Glossy and change the settings if you want. For me, I liked the default gradient most.

3) Finally, select Filters->Render->Clouds->Fog and toy around with the settings and apply.

And, I don't have too many fonts in my system. I used cooltext.com (http://www.cooltext.com) for the text.

I'm not that familiar with Gimp yet and even if I were, I don't have the time. Sorry folks!

Hi,

Can anyone suggest me a free software that I can try for anime/cartoon character design?

Thanks.

Hi,

I'd recommend drawing by hand and then scanning and colouring with GIMP. You could also try Inkscape. You'll find a few Inkscape manga tutorials on YouTube if you search. My wife draws manga and has a few tutorials in her gallery here (http://ryuuri.deviantart.com/).

Update: you mentioned not having many fonts; check Dafont.com (http://www.dafont.com) for lots of free typefaces.

Wow! Thanks! I grabbed the Gohan and Vegeta. And that one you reworked. More Vegeta, please. And Majin Bu. A Bulma cheese cake would be fun too.

PS- Personally, I like the Ubuntu colors on the Gohan.
