I'm not able to view the graphical user interface.
what led to it

i was installing pidgin and evolution packages.i was removing and reinstalling it for some reason.
Had a terminal shortcut icon on desktop which I deleted (shift+delete)

I did not see any problem while doing all this. But when I restarted the system , I could no more view the GUI. I'm only able to access the text console .

So i installed Ubuntu again without deleteing the previous installation. The GUI works fine in the new installation ..i still have all files/documents from the previous installation intact . But I'm not able to access them using GUI. What should I do ?

removing pidgin could be the reason. i guess you are using 9.04. removing pidgin removes the gnome-desktop with it.
