Ubuntu on old Dell laptop goes dark on install attempt.

When I try to install ubuntu 9.10 on this old dell latitude laptop via cd, after the initial screen where it asks what language and after clicking install i get a black screen with a flashing underscore for like 20 minutes before the computer powers off.

Any suggestions? I could really use some help on this one.
