This autumn I attended a guest lecture at my university by Professor Maarten van Steen of the Vrije University Amsterdam. He talked about his research on epidemics in distributed systems and embedded systems in particular. As far I understood the idea was to have the nodes connect to each other in a pseudo random fashion with the adjacent nodes exchanging information mimicing the spread of a disease in a population.

I was wondering if this might be the design of the next file sharing protocol. A completely decentralized system where all peers are equal.

Is there such a way that clients can reach other physically or logically close clients without any prior information? I don't see a way with ipv4, but how about ipv6?
