But will it release in time for Dapper?

If not, I hope it gets put in the repositories fairly soon afterwards.

gnome makes releaces like ubuntu does, every 6 months. March 15th i beleve, ubuntu releaces are set up to be able to include the newest verison of gnome. dapper allready runs on the unstable (but what will become the new) version of gnome i beleve.

I'm quite sure, we'll see Gnome 2.14 in Dapper as Ubuntu's schedules are always wrapper around the Gnome ones. I hope, there will be a way to get the updates to 2.14.1 (and .2 and so on), too, because they often fix some bugs and localisation issues.

I love the metacity part with the integrated compositor and the dual monitor support without xinerama.
I think i will use again metacity instead of xfwm4 when gnome 2.14 will be available.+

really exiting :)

Yeah, it does sound nice:

Multimonitor support, both with and without Xinerama has been improved with Metacity now conciously avoiding placing small windows and dialog boxes across monitor boundaries. This means that many older applications such as GTK+ 1.2 applications and Motif applications which want to put dialog boxes in the middle of the screen will have their dialog boxes moved to one side to remain readable.

I was thinking of changing to Kubuntu when Dapper is released, now I have to consider again... Unless someone posts same kind of tour for KDE full of nice features i haven't seen. Probably there's are some. I've only tried KDE once about two years ago. Oh, well, maybe it's better take them both :)

...love this kind of freedom of choice :D

Looks thrilling. Really dying to have it spinning stable and final on my boxes. Any info on it's release?

If I remember correctly, expect it to hit the Dapper repositories some days after March, 24th.

This is awesome. I will definitely be using Gnome for a long time to come. I'd posted about my horrors with Kubuntu, this just re-enforces my opinion. <p>

I am in the process of downloading a SUSE DVD .iso, to see the full potential of KDE. We shall see...

The Metacity compositing manager requires the latest features of unstable X.org and requires the new texture-from-pixmap extension, as a result this feature is turned off by default.
Does anyone know if Dapper already has or will have those requirements?

Compositing manager in Metacity by GNOME 2.14, now this excites me not because it's new toys but because one "poofyhairguy" promised me he would eat his hat if this happened.

Poofy, I fully expect pictures.

Ubuntu release cycle is based on Gnome. Soon as gnome is released the team will get to work on compiling it for Dapper.
Cheers,

We already have Xorg 7.0.0 in Dapper and currently gnome is the 2.13.9 release, and we are pretty confident that we will be getting the 2.14 with the metacity that does compositing. We also now have early alphas of xgl and compiz in the repos, and there have been successful runs of it. Feel free to read through the dapper development forums to see screenshots of xgl/compiz. Also, Xubuntu has undergone a significant update to xfwm4 2.3.0. We also have Firefox 1.5.0.1 already on the machines, and there is a lot more that has changed in Dapper.
It looks like it will be fairly stable at flight 4 which we think is the 23rd, and indeed already is a fast booter.

I just hope that it doesn't break everything that I have gotten working in the previous version when I upgrade to this version.
