Is there a 64-bit version of Ubuntu for systems based on
a quad Intel processor ?
I have 8 gigs of RAM and have been told I need a 64-bit
operation system to use all 8 gigs of RAM. Is this true?

The 64 bit version is labelled as amd64 on the downloads. This works on the Intel processors as well - I run it :)

And you could use 32 bit with PAE enabled, though 64 bit is probably best, yes :)

It says 'AMD-64' because AMD made the 64 extensions for x86. If Intel hadn't wasted that time making Itanium 64 bit (IA-64, not compatible with x86 or AMD-64) then we might have got Intel-64.

Intel started supporting AMD-64 in the days of the late Pentuim 4s. All the current Intel CPUs (Atom, Core 2 Duo/Qaud, Xeon) support AMD-64. Mind you, they call it Intel 64...I guess they dont like advertising that AMD beat them to it LOL.
