I am using Xubuntu, but would like to try metacity and "Ubuntu"-interface without installing nautilus and many other gnome apps that come with ubuntu-desktop package. (Nautilus has a bad habit to take over desktop even in Xfce session.)

I don't think that it is possible, but try installing gnome-session and metacity.

It'll install nautilus, but not as much extra as unbutu-desktop or gnome-desktop-environment.
