I just install a new hard disc in ubuntu 9.04. Is there anything that I have to do for it to recognize the disc. I'm not seeing it anywhere.

sata, or esata?
What is it formatted as?

esata it comes up as mass storage.
what program should I use to format it. not formatted yet

I thought you said you couldn't see it anywhere?
Use gparted on the livecd to format it. You can install gparted, but be sure not use it on a mounted device.
