It finally sprung to life! After... maybe almost a month of it just sitting there not doing much, idly flicking through it's panels wondering what it was for... it's now showing nearby people to me in England and France! Sorry if people already know this (I'm sure some do) but I thought I would start a thread anyway :)

Here are the screenies!

(my profile)

http://i34.tinypic.com/2m6pock.jpg
(friends page - empty as it only kicked in today so I haven't added anyone!)

http://i35.tinypic.com/qsr4li.jpg
(the page that DID start working! I'm not sure what the zone it covers is, but yeah it seems to just show people using openDesktop nearby!)

Sorry again if I'm late to the party on this one - but I'd just like to say what a cool feature!

Does anyone know how it decides how much of a region to cover? :)

Hoppi!

it's a plasmoid! It's new and seems to be a little rough still, it's part of what the KDE team hopes to work into their desktop! I think it's in the default plasmoids :)

No I just know that I've already posted my desktop on here before, and anyone with openDesktop or Facebook already knows where I live! hehe :)

This. Every time I see my cousin attempt to use a computer, he is bombarded by an endless barrage of tweets, instant messages, facebook requests, friend recommendations, dumb chain mails and probably other evil stuff I don't even know about. How can people live like that?

Or, to carry the analogy to rl, how can you live, knowing someone cares about you that much? It's just a moronic way to con yourself into thinking you're someone special, when the fact is that the majority of humanity doesn't know or care about you, and the few that do are negligible and should be treated as such.

Haha, you can find that for alot of people with quick Google search (myself included) alot of us just don't card ;)

What is this openDesktop thing exactly - plasmoid, is it only for KDE then?

As far as I know, but something similar may exist for Gnome... try here to find out more - http://www.opendesktop.org/

yeah that was pretty much my logic too :)

I don't care too much if people can see roughly where I live so long as they don't like.. know my house number or anything!!

Objectively, there's no such thing as 'should'. Subjectively, anything at all may be considered important.

Yeah, me too, normally, but I'm digging a new sewer line in the back yard and could use some help.

I can't see this thing contributing to that outcome, though.

While I see the point of the first part of your statement and agree it is often overboard with most people.

But I have to say the second part is quite harsh/rude and goes against what Ubuntu stands for. IMHO everyone is special in their own way, no one is negligible, well except maybe those who think others are.

Get back to me on that in twenty years, in the unlikely event I'm still around.

There are vast numbers of people who are utterly negligible for any practical purpose, say those porn spammers who relentlessly hammer your IMs.

From the standpoint of too many decades of broad experience, I can say with honesty that the large majority of activities, persons and learning you will encounter in your life are utterly negligible in the long run, and usually in the short run.

The goal in life is to learn to sort them more quickly. Work on that while you're young and you'll stay ahead of the game. It's your only hope.

Thus ends the lesson, Grasshopper. ;)

woah... what world is THAT!?

Life is to enjoy... there doesn't have to be some big goal or purpose... people don't need a reason people just... ARE.

Besides even if you do think life has to have a point, I challenge you to inform me what that point actually IS! xD

Achieve outcomes, minimize process.

More signal, less noise.

That'll be fifty cents, please. ;)

I'll keep my change for the moment. I argue that optimization isn't the end-all be-all of life. Sure, it makes certain things easier but in the end it's merely a mobilization technique. If all you look for is to be more able, what do you do with your optimized abilities? It's a cyclical goal that leads nowhere.

I honestly think that connection is a big part of what life is about. Not connection like social-networking "OMG Justin Timberlake is SO HAWT" connection. I mean real interpersonal relationships. Other than that, find your own pace. What, you think I'm gonna give up all my secrets? :p

There is a need of a plasmoid container or something like that.(if desktop is filled with windows, who can see the plasmoids?) We should be able to place the plasmoids in it just like placing icons on the desktop . It can be like the side bar in vista but should auto hide like the auto hide of panel .

What do you think about this idea ?

Psychologists agree with you. Numerous studies done into what makes people happy and fulfilled have come back with the same answer: rich and meaningful relationships with other people.

Of course, it's about quality, not quantity. Which kind of gets us back to signal/noise again really :)

Yeah possibly, although bear in mind that other OSs/DEs tend to be moving AWAY from that and towards just scattered widgets! heh :)

It might be nice to have both - maybe you could suggest it in KDE Brainstorm? :)

I made a correction to my previous post . Please see that. I found something like that in pinheiro's(I think you know who pinheiro is) video about the latest changes in kde 4.4. Actually placing plasmoids in panel is enough . But many plasmoids behave differently in a panel . Some will enlarge consuming the whole space of panel , some parts of some other plasmoids will not be displayed etc. I found a plasmoid named" container " in kde-look.org but didn't try since I need to compile it, hehe .

Well unless you are 49yrs old, you do not have 20yrs worth of experience to give me, but who knows maybe you are. I really don't understand how some people in these forums can pass everyone off as being infants and unwise.

While I agree that you do have a point about porn spammers, I can understand your point of view on the rest of it all, but I don't totally agree with it.

Personally I think life is about experiencing, growing from it all, and sharing it with others so that they may grow. But I really haven't done much with my life.

Then again, I only have been in the military 10 1/2yrs, been deployed to Iraq in 2003 and currently there now, have a degree in 3D Animation, working on a second one in Game Art & Design, been in and lived in over a dozen countries, blah, blah, blah.

But I'm glad you're giving me lessons, cause there is for sure nothing I can share with you 'o wise one.
